Sharks Send Blue Sox Off Empty-Handed in 11–0 Shutout
Wesley Scott launched a fifth-inning grand slam and Nick Barron crushed a three-run homer, four RBI apiece, while five Martha's Vineyard pitchers combined on a three-hit, 12-strikeout shutout to snap a two-game skid.
Oak Bluffs, MA, It was a postcard of a mid-July island night at the Shark Tank — clear skies, 74 degrees at the 7:05 first pitch, and a steady southwest breeze rolling across the diamond as the evening cooled into the low 70s. By the time it was over, 3,501 fans had watched the Martha's Vineyard Sharks do to the Valley Blue Sox what sharks do best: circle patiently, then strike all at once, in an 11–0 rout that improved the Sharks to 23–7 on the NECBL season.
After dropping back-to-back home games to Danbury and Newport, Martha's Vineyard needed an answer. It delivered one in every phase — two towering home runs, nine walks drawn, four stolen bases, errorless defense, and a pitching staff that never let Valley sniff home plate.
The first three innings were quiet water. Sharks starter Owen Sarna worked three scoreless frames, scattering a hit and three walks while striking out two, and Valley starter Riley Williams matched him zero for zero.
Then came the fourth. With Wesley Scott and Jackson Taylor aboard, first baseman Nick Barron turned on a 1-1 pitch from reliever Mitchel Brown and sent it over the right-center field wall — a three-run blast that put the Sharks up 3–0 and blew the game's hatch wide open.
The fifth inning was a feeding frenzy. Brown lost the strike zone entirely, and the Sharks made him pay for every pitch. Taylor worked a bases-loaded walk to force in Carter Bentley. Two batters into the carnage, Scott stepped up with the bases still jammed and unloaded on the first pitch he saw, a grand slam to right field that scored Taylor, Ryan Thompson, and Griffin Crain and stretched the lead to 8–0. Bentley added another bases-loaded RBI walk, Will Shaheen scampered home on a passed ball, and by the time the inning finally ended, seven runs had crossed and the rout was on at 10–0. Brown was tagged with the loss (0-3) after recording just five outs.
Barron capped the scoring in the eighth, lining an RBI single to right to plate Thompson and finish his night at 2-for-4 with four RBI — matching Scott, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two walks, and a stolen base. Bentley chipped in two hits and two steals atop a lineup that reached base 21 times.
The bullpen made sure none of it was ever in doubt. Landon O'Donnell (W, 2-0) followed Sarna with two hitless innings, Ben Waterman punched out five over two frames, Warner Gearhart worked a scoreless eighth, and Ryan Renfroe set Valley down in order in the ninth to seal the shutout. All told, Sharks pitching held the Blue Sox to three hits while striking out 12.
The Blue Sox spent two hours and 59 minutes searching for a run that never came, and left the island humming the same tune Quint, Hooper, and Brody once sang aboard the Orca — tired, headed home, and wanting their bed. The Sharks, meanwhile, are still out there in the water.
