Sharks Reel Off Another
Trailing early, the Martha's Vineyard Sharks surfaced with a five-run flurry to sink the Sanford Mainers 5–3 and extend their winning streak.
Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts - Under sunny skies and a comfortable 70 degrees, a crowd of 1,050 packed The Shark Tank and watched the Martha's Vineyard Sharks do what they've been doing all summer — smell blood in the water and finish the job. The Sharks erased an early deficit with a decisive middle-inning surge to beat the Sanford Mainers 5–3, keeping their win streak alive and pushing their record to a league-best 19–5.
Sanford drew first in the top of the second. Brian Connolly ripped an RBI single to center to score Steven Kraus, and moments later Troy Carpenter came home on a wild pitch to stake the Mainers to a 2–0 lead. For four innings that margin held, as both bullpens traded zeroes and the tension built.
Then the tide turned. In the bottom of the fifth, the Sharks went to work. Will Shaheen scampered home on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half, and with runners aboard, Nick Rubino delivered the swing of the inning — a two-run single to left field that plated Wesley Scott and Kevin Hall and flipped the score to 3–2 Vineyard. The Shark Tank was rocking.
Shaheen wasn't done. Leading off the offense's charge in the sixth, the second baseman launched a solo home run to left, his second hit of a perfect 2-for-2 night, to stretch the lead to 4–2. Connolly answered right back with a solo shot of his own for Sanford to make it 4–3, but the Sharks had one more bite left. In the seventh, Rubino lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Kevin Hall, capping a three-RBI afternoon and providing the 5–3 final margin.
The Vineyard pitching staff was every bit as sharp as the offense. Starter Callen Powers set the tone with three innings and five strikeouts. Landon O'Donnell took over and was untouchable, spinning two scoreless frames with three punchouts to earn the win and improve to 1–0. Ryan Renfroe slammed the door in the ninth — er, the seventh — striking out three in two innings to lock down his fourth save of the season. As a staff, the Sharks racked up 11 strikeouts against just six hits allowed and committed zero errors behind them.
It was a complete team effort defined by pressure and opportunism: four stolen bases, timely two-out hitting, and clutch pitching from a deep bullpen. With the streak intact and the standings firmly in their favor, the Sharks continue to prove that once they get in the water, they're awfully hard to stop.
