Martha's Vineyard Sharks: About Us

I love you Sharky!

Who are the Sharks? The team is a composition of players that come from the top collegiate baseball programs in the country preparing them to be drafted into Major League Baseball. If you want to bond, show your kids how a crisp game of baseball is played, see positive work habits, gain insight into how to balance baseball with academics and see tomorrow’s stars, then Vineyard Baseball Park is the place to be during the summer!

What has transpired since an agreement between Carminucci Sports Group (CSG) and the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) took place in early 2011. The Sharks have built a maintenance building that includes:

  • two garages for maintenance equipment,
  • an office for the MVRHS baseball staff and
  • an indoor batting cage.

You can now add 280 stadium-style seats to the list! The seats are from Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles. Lights will be installed before the 2013 baseball season bringing night games to the Vineyard.

Additionally “kids zone” fenced-in-area has been developed, a top of the line TORO riding lawn mower and a Toro infield groomer have been purchased and three food concession and two apparel sheds have been built. The electrical infrastructure has been donated by Powers Electric Inc.

The Sharks will play a 54 regular-season schedule in 2013 running from early June through mid-August. Opening Day will be Tuesday, June 11th with a starting time of 6:00 PM. The very first night game will be Saturday, June 15th with a starting time of 6:45 PM. The Sharks will have two Kids Day @ the Park on June 28th and July 19th with starting time being 11:00 AM. All kids 12 and under get into the Park for free.

The MV Times and the Vineyard Gazette newspapers will carry coverage of the Sharks. Every game is broadcast in both video and audio over the Internet by selecting the link on each page of the Sharks website. Of course you can always go to the Sharks website and follow the online scoreboard during each league game.  You can read the daily sports beat, which will be prepared by a combination of MVRHS students and college interns that provides a recap of the previous game. This is a great way to get to know the players even if you are not at the game as long as you have access through your smartphone or iPad.

The concept of putting a team on the Vineyard was that of Chris Carminucci (CEO of CSG). He developed, then executed their vision of bringing a hometown team to the Vineyard, something never done before. The development and execution of the business plan fell into the hands of Jerry Murphy (General Manager & CFO) and Bob Tankard (Vice President of Baseball Operations), both operating officers and owners of the team.
